About the Columbia Global Centers

Columbia University has long maintained an active presence around the world through an extensive array of international research, study abroad, and partnership programs with other universities. Columbia’s New York City campuses are also home to an extraordinary range of globally admired international research institutes and centers. Motivated by the belief that it is essential to continue to expand its knowledge and engagement in the world, the University is deepening its global perspective by establishing a network of Columbia Global Centers. Attuned to the priorities and unique circumstances of its host region, each center will leverage the University’s diverse intellectual capacities.

Some U.S. universities have built new branch campuses and degree-granting schools abroad. Columbia is taking a different path. The Columbia Global Centers provide flexible regional hubs for a wide range of activities and resources intended to enhance the quality of research and learning at the University and around the world. The focus is on establishing a network of partnerships in international capitals to collaboratively address complex global challenges by bringing together scholars, students, public officials, private enterprise, and innovators from a broad range of fields. The Columbia Global Centers | Amman was one of the first two centers to come online, along with the Columbia Global Centers | Beijing, in March 2009. The University plans six to eight global centers when the program is at full strength.
